The meeting was called to order by V. Pres. Joe Steiner @ 12:30pm.

The November Secretary report was e-mailed to each officer in Nov. by Sect. Barb Collins. Paul Saurborn motioned to accept. Jim Winger second. All approve. Motion carried.
Treasurer’s reports for Dec & Jan were handed out and reviewed by Treasurer Linda Winger. Barbara Collins motioned to accept, Paul Saurborn second. All approve. Motion carried.

INFORMATION ITEMS

The South West Conservation Club suggested a price raise in rent. This was reviewed by SWCC and Pres. Jim Winger. An agreement was reached to keep the rent as is and the new 2012 contract was signed.

OLD BUSINESS

501c3 – Chris Cooperrider reports her findings. $850.00 fee for filing. Would need to adjust the articles of Incorporation and By Laws. We will continue working on 501c3 status. Target date for filing is May 1st 2012.
Bands- Joe Steiner-V. Pres./Band coordinator. Joe reviewed the band list and budget. Discussion on bands followed. List not complete for S12 & F12 yet.
Chris C. would like to do Extended Workshops in the fall. All agreed. Considering a Band Scramble or Battle of the Bands for Spring. Chris will look for someone to investigate and coordinate. Joe S. made a motion to pursue some kind of band scramble and find a director for that event. Also consider an Instrument contest. Discussion will continue at the February meeting. Jim W. second. All agree. Motion carried.
Expense Items: Reduced Golf Carts by 2; reduced Porta-Jons by 2;
Considered reducing size of large 40x100 Tent. All voted no. Both tents are paid for all of 2012. Linda Winger will take pictures of the audience crowd in the 40x100 tent on Thursday and Saturday in Spring 2012 to determine if that tent can be reduced to a smaller size for 2013.
Utility usage discussion. Where can we cut back? One suggestion agreed on – Change the A/C temperature in the Log Cabin when not in use.
Jim Winger will do a study on ‘Early Camping’ and make a recommendation for any adjustments. The board wants to study the impact of any changes and an increase in 2012 is not likely.
Vendors – Jeanette Young. She has had calls from Vendors interested. So far some of the same are returning. Have Food Vendors, leather goods, music by Harold Jones. Discussion on fees. Suggestions on how to encourage new vendors. Need variety. TABLE: Research on adding vendors and adjusting vendors fees. Report on vendors in February.

Shellie & Bob were long time members and were at many Tri-State festivals. They parked just north of the gate. Shellie played the bass and loved to sing.

You could always count on Shellie to help out at the festival. She and Bob would often work the gate.

They lived in Detroit area when attending the festivals but Shellie has been in Arizona with her daughter for a number of years.

From her daughter:
Mom passed Sat 1-21-2012 at 12:15 while listening to her bluegrass cassettes I had turned on for her. She stayed in a elder care home and it was just like a house.
She sold her bass many years ago to Dana Cupp Jr for his wife but she would sing and entertain at the home.
No memorial is planned as that how they wanted it. She is being cremated. She only had my brother Robert Cagle Jr. and I. Daddy (Bob) left us on May 16, 2008. He left his instruments to the grand kids and only one plays professionally. Adam Cagle has a band in Michigan called Yankeeville.
I am sure she will be playing in heaven with the Bill Monroe and many others.

AUBURN, IN — Pauline Collingsworth of Auburn died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. She was a big bluegrass fan and regularly attended the NIBGA festivals. She was still working and dancing before her recent stroke.

Russ ran the Avilla Lions Food booth at the Tri-State Festival for many years. The booth is located just north of the stage area.

While his wife was still alive, she would come by our trailer on Sunday night and give us the soup that was left over from the food booth. It made a great Monday dinner.

Russ has been in declining health and had not worked at the booth for the last couple of years. He died Monday Dec. 26, 2011.

F. Warren Hellman, a banjo-picking billionaire whose life followed such an extraordinary and eccentric arc it perhaps could only have taken place in San Francisco, died Dec. 18, 2011 at UCSF Medical Center. He was 77.

Warren founded the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival at the San Francisco Golden Gate park. The festival has grown to a three-day affair, with an attendance of more than 600,000 fans who see world-renowned acts like Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle and Elvis Costello — for free.

The October Secretary report was sent by e-mail to all officers in Oct. 2011. Paul Saurborn motioned to accept as read. T.J. Collins seconded. All approve. Motion carried.

Financial reports were e-mailed to all officers by Treasurer Linda Winger. Financial were reviewed at the meeting. Paul Saurborn motioned to accept. Barbara Collins seconded. All approve. Motion carried.

OLD BUSINESS

TABLE: Emergency procedures handout. Work out at March/April meetings.
501C3 --- What should we do? Who will do it? Estimated time to complete? There was a discussion. Try to do it right. Get original charter changed. Do at January meeting. Chris will get appropriate paper work. There will be a motion drawn up by Joe Steiner for the Jan. meeting
All festivals are probably having a strained budget. Review possible band prospects. Reviewed budget. Band philosophy for 2012; national, regional, local, entertainment value, old timey, bluegrass, etc. There was a long discussion about bands.
Workshops at S11 festival appear to have been successful. After review and discussion it was determined we would continue workshops for S12. Paul Saurborn motioned to continue workshops. Pam Keiper seconded. All approved. Motion carried.
GOLF CARTS: Discussion on how to cut back on golf carts. 2 seat carts and cargo boxes rent for $30 a day. 4 seaters rent for $50 a day. 6 seat carts are $75 a day plus a fixed delivery charge. Total $2,400. After much review it was decided to cut total amount of 2 seat carts from 12 to 10. There might be a 4 seat Taxi cart and a 6 seat cart. We will keep the utility cart for the janitor.

Port-a-jons: Camper units are less lately. Discussion on saving money by cutting back. It was decided to drop 2 of the potties. There are 4 public bathrooms which are spread out throughout the fairgrounds.
Advertising: after discussion T.J. Collins motioned to continue advertising with WAWK radio and News Sun wrap. Paul Saurborn seconded. All approve. Motion carried.
It was voted NO for advertising with other radio stations and Music store mailings.
Joe Steiner motioned to continue with news releases. Paul Saurborn seconded. All approve. Motion carried.
Paul Saurborn motioned to continue with placemat ads with Don in Kendallville and LFT in Ft. Wayne. T.J. Collins seconded. All approved. Motion carried.
Barbara Collins motioned to continue with the Web. About 10,000 page views by 5,000 visitors over the last year. #1 page is Concerts & Festivals. Joe Steiner seconded. All approve. Motion carried.

Low power complaints – Dec/Jan newsletter outlined problems with upgrading power and why it might be very expensive. Don Moore is trying but it will take time. No further action needed.
Merchandise was discussed again. Linda gave a report. A complete inventory was done Oct. 16th. The cash register would not let 3 department keys work at the festival so the cash drawer tape is inaccurate. Jim W. will investigate

NEW BUSINESS

TENTS: Ace Tents – Rental – Same as before? Payment due Dec 31, 2011; 30x60 - $400 40x100 - $900. Linda will look into prices for a tent size smaller than the 40/100. She will report to the board and a vote will be needed before Dec 15, 2011.
Should we advertise in the Tri-State book? After discussion Joe Steiner motioned not to advertise there. T.J. Collins second. All approve. Motion carried.
Treasurer Linda Winger requested permission to purchase 2000 Forever Stamps before the price raise in 2012. This will save the club some money. Barbara Collins motioned for Linda to buy 2000 Forever Stamps. Paul Saurborn seconded. All approved. Motion carried.
Paul Saurborn motioned to adjourn at 2:50 P.M. Barbara Collins seconded. President Jim Winger called the meeting adjourned.

The next meeting of Northern Indiana Bluegrass Association will be the 3rd Sunday in January of 2012.

Delta Reign looking for gigs in March 2012

Hi,

Benita Murphy here with the band Delta Reign from the Mobile, AL gulf coast. I just spoke with Linda a few minutes ago and she suggested e-mailing you with my information.

Our band will be coming to Tawas City, MI to perform at the Corsair concert series on March 3rd. I am in the process of trying to book some other show dates around that concert on the way up and/or back. Since your association is in that region, I figured that you may have some suggestions of places or venues that might be willing to host another concert for Delta Reign. I am very good at pursuing leads, so any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

First, a little about us...

We are from the Mobile, AL "delta" region on the gulf coast. Our bluegrass is little different, driven by banjo, Vassar Clements style fiddling, pushed along with western swing rhythms, bluesy singing, tight harmonies, and a dash of jazz, folks are saying that we are giving our genre' a fresh new sound. We put on a good show and appeal across genre's, yet we don't offend most traditionalists. With our recent CD under our belt, national (and international) airplay, recent national reviews in Bluegrass Unlimited, Bluegrass Music Profiles and other publications, we are set to make our mark on a broader level in bluegrass.

Jim lived in Harrod, Ohio which is a small town south east of Lima, Ohio

The Board of Directors of the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) announced today that it has reluctantly accepted the resignation of Executive Director Dan Hays, effective February 29, 2012. In doing so, the Board expressed its profound appreciation for Hays’ 21 years of effective, dedicated service in the position, noting that his contributions have been indispensible to the organization’s stature as a force for professionalism within the industry and as an advocate for the music in broader circles.

Country music fans, especially of the Bluegrass persuasion, turned out Friday night for Mayor Rick Chamber’s Bluegrass Jam at the Knox Community Center.

Mayor Chambers said the event gives musicians, and fans alike a chance to get out and enjoy their music of choice.

“We had a great turnout as usual,” said Mayor Rick Chambers. “We had about 270 people here. We had donations for the Food Pantry and my pickup truck is full of food. We probably have 700 or 800 pounds of food. It’s a really great turnout. We hold these events about twice a year and we’d like to do more, but the Community Center is usually rented out, so we do one in early spring and late fall.”

Over $300.00 was collected as well.

The Aug. 28 and Sept. 1 meeting minutes were e-mailed to officers by Secretary Barbara Collins on 9/13/11. Paul S. motioned to accept the minutes. Joe S. second. All approve. Motion carried.
The Aug. and Sept. Financial Reports were e-mailed to all officers in early Oct. by Treasurer Linda Winger. The reports were reviewed. Pam K. motioned to accept the reports. Paul S. second. All approve. Motion carried.
A Memorial donation was given to NIBGA in memory of Eldon “Whitey” Leitch. It was agreed it would be designated to the ‘Kids Korner’ craft activities at the festivals.

The board reviewed and discussed the details of the Labor Day Festival report. The tally is still preliminary as of 10-10-11 as some bills have not been received.
Jim W. reviewed Festival History, attendance and income. Attendance is down about 40% since 2008. General discussion agreed it was very much economy related. The board needs to carefully examine all aspects of the festival.
TABLE: We will review the Festival expenses focusing on all items at the next meeting on November 20th. Can we reduce expenses without effecting the festival?
The board had a lengthy discussion on the use of Shoe Taps/No Shoe Taps on the dance floor at the festivals. There have been complaints and comments both ways. Some say it is distracting while others enjoy the taps. The board has taking this matter seriously.

NIBGA encourages dancing, which has been going on for years, we don’t want the attendees at the stage area to be annoyed by loud noise. The quality of tap dancing can vary. Some bands at the festival and from a later survey conducted by Joe S. commented that taps distracts their rhythm.

The board doesn’t want to impose another rule, but we want to try to ensure the best possible concert experience for all attendees. With this objective, the options of "taps allowed" or “dancing encouraged but no taps please” were considered. Also discussed was any noise making item would be strongly discouraged.

Paul S. motioned prohibit shoe taps, out of respect for other audience members. This is consistent with our sign at the stage stating: “Quiet. Please respect our artists.” TJ C. second. All approve. Motion carried. An article will be in an upcoming newsletter about this discussion and the decision.
NIBGA & the Noble Co. Fair board have received letters and e-mails regarding poor power on the track. What should we do? Estimate cost for additional electric on track for 8 circuits are: temporary $400 each use, permanent $1,500-2,000. There was much discussion on this subject. There is a lack of funds to install electric. It is doubtful that the fair board has funding. Jim will reply to the complaint letter.
Merchandise report is not complete, an inventory needs to be taken. Pam & Dave K., Paul & Sue S., Chris C. & Joe S. will stop at Wingers after the meeting and assist in inventorying the merchandise.
Determine 2012 Festival budgets starting with the major category, band budget, so Joe S. can begin hiring bands. To cut expenses it was suggested a cut in the Sat or Sun. schedule times. Paul S. motioned to cut one Sun. band and adjust the times. Joe S. seconded, All approve. Motion carried.
Paul S. motioned to use $15,000 as a target amount per festival with a cap of $20,000. TJ C. second. All approve. Motion carried.

Hi Jim:

It was a pleasure chatting with you a few minutes ago. My name is Dan Mazer. Using the stage name "BanjerDan," I'm a banjo player/multi-instrumentalist based in Washingtton, DC. My music is an Americana mix, rooted in straight-ahead bluegrass and branching out to include folk, country, blues, oldies, and other styles. I've performed all over the U.S. and internationally, as a solo artist, as a member of bands, and in theatrical productions and orchestras. I've received some notoriety of late as a member of "J.B. Beverley & The Wayward Drifters."

I'm planning a tour which will take me to Ft. Wayne on Tuesday, January 10th, 2012., and hope you'll be able to find a venue for my solo acoustic, mostly-banjo show. I could also do a banjo workshop or a children's program.

I am the Activity Director at a Senior Living Community in Bluffton, Indiana. (River Terrace Estates) We are having a Hog Roast for our Residents on October 20th from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.. Some of our residents have requested some live Blue Grass Music. My problem is I do not know any Blue Grass Groups or how much they would charge. I found your website and was hoping you could help me with some information.

There was a review of the Spring 2011 Festival Tally (8/20/11). No action needed. Festival income is down a little from Fall of last year.
Paul and Sue Saurborn will do the newsletter mailing for in Sept. which will be the Oct. 2011 newsletter.
WiFi up and running on the Merchants Building & Log Cabin.
Street sweeping down the midway will be Thursday 9/1/11.
Trash Pickup: We are charged for tonnage only on Thursday and Friday. Saturday and Sunday the cost is $60.00 each day. All pickup times are A.M.
The Security systems in the log cabin and merchants building are off at this time.
Honey wagon schedule: Wed PM RV only, Friday PM RV and Port-a-jons, Sat RV and Port-a-jons, Monday 7 AM RV only. Fee for service remains at $10.00.

NEW BUSINESS

Single point of contact between fair board and NIBGA is Jim Winger / Don Moore
Radio Inventory. To determine how many radios are in circulation and if everyone has the proper charger and or needs batteries.
TABLE: Discussion on if we want to donate to Noble Co. fairgrounds to add some new electric on the track . Possible 8 circuits. One time $400. Permanent $1,500 -$2,000. Should we ask the Horse & Pony Club to share the expenses for electric in their area? Paul Saurborn motioned and TJ Collins seconded to discuss further.
Emergency procedures handout & review – JW There was a lengthy review of necessary emergency procedures and how to set action in place if necessary. Suggestions on how to notify the crowd; announce from the stage and office intercom; set points of contact and gathering points; put person in charge of posting at important spots; emergency procedures are necessary for storm, accidents, chemical spills, child abduction, medical emergencies and more. The board will work on a solid plan over the winter.
NO ROPING off spots for anyone except Bands. The board will determine who gets a reserved band spot and where.
Weekend tickets were passed out to all officers.
Band bus parking. Joe Steiner needs one spot as of now.
Bands and Host report – Chris Cooperrider. Need just a few host as of now. Maggie Bilby will set up a table in the merchandise tent for potential Host to sign up.
Pam Keiper has the band tickets for all bands to enter. Two tickets per band member and they need to sign in at the gate. (Joe S.)
The Stockdale Family band will be playing at Sacred Hearts home, Avilla , IN on Friday 9/2 at 2p. compliments of Northern Indiana Bluegrass Association.
Announcers are: Thursday PM- Donnie Voiles; Friday PM -Terry Thacker; Saturday AM -Terri Grannis, Saturday PM – Donnie Voiles; Sunday AM - Terry Thacker; Sunday afternoon and evening – Chris Vogie.

T.J. Collins – Grounds: Reports things are going well now. Handicap roped off, plenty of camping room.
Julie Goldsmith – Kids Kraft Korner – 5 activities. (spiders, cup stacking, etc.) Julie needs 12 Tables and 40 chairs. Set up Monday 8/29. Tear down craft area Sat. 9/3.
Merchandise order report – Linda Winger/Barb Collins. Barb will do inventory Sunday evening.
Need 7 tables, no chairs in tent. Need racks & hangers from the stage storage on Thursday 9/1.
Jeanette Young – Vendor Chair. No bake sale group has been found. All regular food vendors from spring are returning. This will be Tim's last festival here for selling strings. The wood vendor will be coming in. Ice Cream wagon –yes. It was suggested to offer Harold Jones to sell instrument strings when Tim no longer does.
Taxi sign up list at small log cabin and gate areas. Taxi dispatch 260-302-1555 – Chris C.
Sheriff schedules are same as in the spring. They need a cart and radio, Jim will provide.
The board and chairs are to be on stage for introduction at 2:15 PM Saturday 9/3/11.
Jim and Linda's phones have been reported to 911 as an emergency contact. Generally use Linda for 911.
Leave radios on at all times until bedtime.
Requested that all officers report when they are leaving the grounds and when we return.
Thursday there will be a short reporting meeting at 1:00p.m. at Winger's campsite.

Sept. 17, 2011 Annual Prairie Fest - Campton Hills, IL

Bluegrass pickers wanted at Corron Farm, 7N761 Corron Road in Campton Hills to help celebrate the 2011 Annual Prairie Fest on Saturday September 17th.

Corron Farm was settled in 1835 and was in the Corron family until Campton Township purchased it in 2002 for open space. The farmstead is a Kane County Historic Site. Prairie Fest celebrates agriculture, history and nature, so bluegrass musicians will fit right in. We will have tours of the 1850 home and the 1880s hired man's house, hayrides through the prairie and savanna, various historical and nature exhibits, cider and donuts and cakes made from 100+ year old recipes, a children's corner, antique tractors and other farm equipment.

The event is held at Corron Farm, 7N761 Corron Road in Campton Hills. The farm is north of Silver Glen Road but south of McDonald Road, right across from the Meissner-Corron Forest Preserve (which is where the volunteers park).

Kendallville, IN Labor Day activities

This Labor Day Weekend marks a new beginning in Noble County and the Kendallville community as we host the first Aviation and Auto-vation Fair at the Kendallville Airport. This is a new event designed to showcase the innovative spirit of Noble County and Indiana in the automotive and aviation worlds. This first year event highlights the celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the 810 Cord Automobile, and the arrival of two vintage aircraft. There will be a B-17 Bomber that will offer passenger excursions and a C-47 that will be grounded for tours and display.

The Tri-State Bluegrass festival will also be held on Sept. 1-4.

Fiddle contest Sept. 24, 2011

The Forks of the Wabash Pioneer Festival in Huntington, Indiana is planning an Old Time Fiddle Contest on Saturday, September 24 at 1:15 PM. The Festival is held at Hier's Park which is located at Briant and Taylor Streets on the south side of Huntington.

Cash prizes of $100, $75, and $50 will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. The first 12 contestants to enter by September 20 will receive $25.00. Drawing for the order of performance will be held at the center stage at 12:45. Each contestant will play 3 fiddle tunes, with one or two back-ups playing acoustical instruments.

Based on two calls this week we should have a good turnout at the upcoming Labor Day Tri-State festival.

1) A gentleman called and said he has been coming a couple of years. "I understand you didn't do well in the spring. Other festivals quit or are having problems. Could I suggest you raise your ticket price $5 so you won't go out of business?"

2) I have to be in Florida and won't be back until 8/31. "Can I bring my RV in on 8/22 or 23 and leave it? I'll pay a daily camping fee. I am afraid if I wait until 8/31 to come in, I won't get my spot."

Campers can start arriving August 25. This is when our contract begins. Camping prior to that date is paid to the fairgrounds.

Dave Evans suffers heart attack.

On July 28, 2011 Dave had a heart attack. He is resting in the St. Joseph hospital in London, KY as of 7/30.

He came through surgery but due to his diabetes, he may have to have one or both legs amputated.

I'm looking (and so is Tom Ewing, at work on a new biography of Bill Monroe) for basic historic information about the band "The Moore Brothers," who played many times at Bean Blossom in the 1960s and 1970s, with Jim Cornell on banjo.

Does anyone at the Northern Indiana Bluegrass Music Assn. know the history and personnel of this band? Who would know?

Kenny Baker, 85, died July 8, 2011

Kenny suffered a stroke earlier that week. He played with Bill Monroe and was a respected and admired fiddle player.
During a package show with Don Gibson, Baker met Monroe and was offered a job. He cut his first recordings with Monroe's Bluegrass Boys on December 15, 1957.
Kenny Baker served more years in Monroe's band than any other musician and was selected by Monroe to record the fiddle tunes passed down from Uncle Pen Vandiver.

NIBGA will not be having a Showcase room or sponsoring a showcase in the ball room. Gate Captains will share golf carts during the festival. They will make the decision among themselves.
Workshop schedule; See 'Hand out' All set to go. Tables and chairs will be set up for each workshop spot.
Advertising; 5 radio stations, place mats in Kendallville and Fort Wayne restaurants. 3 stations give 2 daily tickets per call in. 3 x 3 = 9 tickets.

Propane sale during Tri-State festival

Amerigas, located just west of Kendallville, IN on US6 (5695 East US Highway 6, Kendallville, IN 46755 260-347-2266) will fill 20# for $10 and 30# for $15 if you bring canned goods for the local food bank before 3p each day. You can register to win 100 gallons of propane.

On Friday, May 27 from 11a-2p WAWK broadcasting with free pop and hot dogs. The propane drawing will be during this time.

Stage and vendors are at Tri-State

The stage arrived a few minutes ago. Tires were low so the crew had to pump them up. There has been some minor damage while it was in storage. It appears the soft aluminum skin has been scraped.

Two of many vendors arrived Sunday night with many more expected.

As of Saturday night there were 74 rigs on the grounds.

The chairs are awaiting an audience.

Come Jam in Ossian, IN June 30!

I live in Ossian Indiana, and there are several people in the area who have an appreciation of Bluegrass Music. On Thursday June 30 Ossian is having a Freedom Fest, and would love to have an opportunity at that time to expose folks to some wonderful Bluegrass music. We are trying to find contacts, and see if some folks would even be willing to come and use this as a format to 'jam' and expand the fan base here.

Unfortunately we are planning this Freedom Fest Celebration without a budget, but perhaps some of us personally could help with expenses etc to travel here to Ossian. We are about 4 1/2 miles south of 469 on U.S. 1.

I moved here from the mountains of western North Carolina and sure enjoyed it lots there, and look forward to hearing much more here. We hope to make it to Kendalville this year.

DISCOVER BLUEGRASS DAY

A Full Day of Workshops Presented by Professional Musicians

We are excited to present a full day of workshops on May 27, the Friday of the Memorial Day Festival. These workshops will be free to all festival attendees. If you would like to just come for the day, the cost of a Friday daily ticket is $8 and will allow you to attend all workshops, plus all other activities and concerts on Friday night.

Workshops will be 2 hours in length, including time to pack up and move to the next workshop. Preregistration is not required…just show up at the door! You will find schedules posted on the bathroom doors and at the merchants’ building, but if you want to start planning your day now, here is the preliminary schedule. You can attend one session per time slot.

Choices are:

10am until noon – Song Writing, Banjo, Dobro, or Guitar

Noon until 2pm – Mountain Dulcimer, Fiddle, or Bass

2 pm until 4pm – Mandolin or Harmonica

4 pm until 6pm – Harmony Singing, Beginner Bluegrass Jam, Old-Time/Bluegrass Dancing

In addition to the above FREE sessions, we will be offering a workshop from 2pm until 6pm (yes, FOUR hours!) with Bull Harmon. This will be geared towards the more advanced players, and there will be a $25 fee for this class. You must preregister in advance with Chris Cooperrider as there is a limit of 12 students in this class. Call 260-302-1555 for more information or to preregister.

The Saturday morning workshops are being replaced by this Friday spectacular. There will still be the “Slow Jam” on Saturday from 12-1:30p in the Mini Barn along with the Kids Korner at 10:00 to 11:30a.

The antenna is located atop the Merchants building. The range varies but is generally line of site for 100 yards. If you cannot get reception at your location, move closer to the east end of the Merchants building.

The antenna is off when we are not on the grounds to prevent free service to area homes.

Etc.? to change by-laws. Consideration: Have a drawing for both cash and other prizes to encourage attendance at jams. Can just come to listen or play and have a chance to win a prize. Point out it is a free event. Find out rules and possibilities for Proxy voting. 1/3 have to be present to vote any changes. Note to Dwight Worden, IBMA Assoc. rep, regarding options, awaiting response.
Band update - need to know about buses - How many? What electrical needs will they have? Band Chair - Joe Steiner reports there will be no buses needing electric as far as he knows.
Workshop status: Chris C. There will be 13 different workshops. Tickets for workshop directors will be at the gate. Must sign in. They will be week end tickets. Bull Harmon workshop - will be in the Log Cabin. Others will be in the Mini Barn, Open barn - Swine Barn, one other in the Log Cabin also. *Chris C. and *Linda W. will make workshop posters. *Chris C. will let officers know how many chairs she will need and where they are needed for workshops.
Advertising: Pres. Jim Winger is taking care of advertising for the Memorial Day festival. There will be a NIBGA add on placemats at 2 Ft. Wayne restaurants. IBMA 2011 - Should we attend? If so - who? Rooms & meals around $2,300, tickets around $1,600 Options: No one go; Just Joe Steiner go; Joe Steiner & Chris Cooperrider go; or Joe, Chris, Jim & Linda Winger go. There are benefits in a NIBGA presents at the International Bluegrass Music Association Convention. TABLE: for May 22 meeting. Must be decided soon.

NEW BUSINESS

NIBGA received a recommendation for a young man named Jonathan Demers for a music Scholarship. Jonathan has played mandolin and guitar and provided harmony vocals with Amy Gallatin & Stillwaters for nearly 3 years. Jonathan has applied personally for a Scholarship from NIBGA.

Jonathan has auditioned and been accepted to Berklee Collage of Music in Boston, MA. He also has a background in music because of his father, Paternal Grandfather and Paternal Grandmother who are/were all involved in music and bands. Jonathan's desire to further develop his music training and skills is sincere. His need for financial help is significant. His desire to train at Burklee is strong. After the board looked at his need and qualifications Joe Steiner motioned to award Jonathan Demers a Scholarship for $500.00. Linda Winger second. All approve. Motion Carried.

Secretary Barbara Collins will write a letter of acceptance to Jonathan.
Suzuki class will perform at the Spring festival. Linda Winger reviewed the procedures for their tickets for entering the gate. There will be a list of qualified members to sign in for their tickets.
Linda Winger showed her final draft for the Spring/Fall 2011 T-Shirt design. The design was approved.
Chris Cooperrider reported that all bands that wanted hosted have been assigned and notified. All is set to go.

Hazel Dickens - 75

Hazel Dickens, a troubadour of hard times whose raw, heartfelt songs about coal miners and the life of the downtrodden made her a revered figure in country and bluegrass music, died April 22 at the Washington Home hospice in the District. She was 75 and had complications from pneumonia.

Excitment for Labor Day in Kendallville

I noticed in your recent newsletter a list of things to do and see in northeast Indiana. I wanted to let you know, that to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Cord 810 automobile, planning is underway for an event similar to last year's Duesenberg Exhibition of Speed at the Kendallville Airport over Labor Day weekend.

Bill Hummel, E.L. Cord's grandson, asked the city's aviation board for permission to use the airport runway for Cord races, display of antique and classic automobiles. The board approved and FAA permission is expected to temporarily close the runway on Friday, Sept. 2. A parade of Cords and classic autos like last year is planned from Auburn to Kendallville.

Aviation will be the focus on Saturday, Sept. 3, with exhibits, a fly- in and the board is working with the same group that brought the World War II B-24 to the airport last year to arrange for a B-17 appearance and rides.

This is for Labor Day weekend, but I thought you'd like a heads-up to let your members know well in advance.

Francis Geels, 86, Over Jordan

Francis Geels passed away after an extended illness, April 11, 2011 at home. Francis was a fixture at all NIBGA festivals. We first met him at Ottawa, OH at the reunions. We had the biggest camp fire on the grounds. Francis would come by around midnight after other jams had quit. It wouldn't be long until our jam was fired up again with him leading the way on the fiddle.

He and his family band, The Geels Family, played many Kendallville and before festivals. He was a renowned fiddle player and played with numerous other groups including Joe Taylor & The Redbirds and Fiddler & Sis. He taught the fiddle with Master Artist Apprenticeship Program. He also made and repaired string instruments.

We've received word that Dave Hart from Antwerp, Ohio passed away this afternoon, April 8 at home. He had been ill recently but was determined to come to Tri-State Memorial weekend.

Dave was on the board of NIBGA and has been an active member for many years. He will be missed by his many friends and family.

Alison Krauss & Union Station summer tour

"Paper Airplane" is the first Alison Krauss and Union Station CD in six years. It features dobro virtuoso Jerry Douglas along with the other Union Station members. Target will have a special release of the CD with 6 additional tracks.

Alison has more Grammy Awards than any other female artist. Not only has she one in the bluegrass category but also win for country, for collaborations and for song & album of the year with Robert Plant.

She has planned a 50 city tour this summer. It has been several years since Alison and Union Station band members Dan Tyminski (guitar, mandolin and lead vocals), Barry Bales (bass and harmony vocals), Ron Block (banjo, guitar and harmony vocals), and Jerry Douglas (Dobro and harmony vocals) toured together.

They Toy Hearts have suffered the ultimate indignity to befall the touring musician. On April 6 they found all their sound gear stolen in Birmingham, UK. Someone broke into their van and took it all.
The Toy Hearts were at our Kendallville festival over Labor Day 2009. They also played the Sacred Hearts nursing home in Avilla.

Joe Taylor - 89

Joe Taylor and the Red Birds was a local country band who played from 1948 to 1998. For you oldies, they were on the WOWO Little Red Barn every Sat when I was a kid.

Joe and Patty Corbat resided at the Scared Heart Nursing home in Avilla, IN where NIBGA bands have played on Fridays of the festivals. Many of the bands who played there will remember Joe as a person who loved to talk with them.

Bluegrass impresario Carlton Haney, a promoter and booking agent who helped popularize the music by spearheading the bluegrass festival phenomenon, died Wednesday afternoon in Greensboro, N.C. A member of the International Bluegrass Music Association Hall of Fame, Haney was 82 years old.

Haney served as a booking agent for Bill Monroe & the Blue Grass Boys from 1953-55, and as booking agent and manager for Don Reno, Red Smiley & The Tennessee Cut-Ups from 1955-64. As a festival promoter, he worked with practically every big name in bluegrass music beginning in 1965, when he organized what he called the “Blue Grass Festival” on a horse farm in Fincastle, Va.

That “Blue Grass” (Haney preferred the two-word phrase rather than the now-common “bluegrass” because Monroe’s band was called the Blue Grass Boys) festival featured Monroe, Jimmy Martin, Mac Wiseman, Doc Watson, the Stanley Brothers and many more, and it was successful enough to spawn hundreds of other bluegrass festivals. Those festivals were a major shot in the arm for bluegrass, as they provided a means by which fans could hear a bevy of top acts in one weekend and often interact with musicians in informal “pickin’ sessions.”

You may not have been aware of us as a bluegrass/alt country band or even aware that we are based in Christchurch, New Zealand. However, we are sure you have heard of the city that we live in and love, as it has been in the news lately as a result of a destructive earthquake last Tuesday 22nd February. Many, many lives have been lost, many families are shattered, the city is without key infrastrcture and there is a long road ahead to recovery. The material loss suffered by some band members pales in comparison to the loss of family, friends, livelihood and property experienced by others.

Amongst it all, stories of heroism, bravery and a real sense of a united community are surfacing. Everyone is helping others out without asking for reward or recognition. This is a very humbling experience and reminds us why we love this city and this country.

As part of the rescue efforts we have received help and support from all around the world and as part of the process of rebuilding we need your help.

Joe Steiner reports. The Electrical problem at the gate area has been resolved.
Joe Steiner - V. Pres/Band chairman has completed the hiring of the bands for Spring and Fall 2011 for the N festivals. A list was given to each officer. Joe has been able to stay under budget again. Good job Joe! This job is very time consuming and we appreciate Joe's talent and time it takes to contact and contract bands.
Chris Cooperrider has been working on plans for festival workshops. Bull Harmon will be doing an four hour guitar workshop. Chris will be working up a list for the scheduling of all workshops. Some to be planned are: harmonica, mountain dulcimer, bass, clogging, & jamming. And hopefully: workshops for mandolin, dobro, fiddle, banjo, song-writing, and harmony singing can be set up. Chris will have more information for the March meeting and the April newsletter. This information will go on the NIBGA WEB and Blog.
Chris purposed that the people directing workshops will get two weekend tickets. She suggested that jamming workshops be early in the weekend to free up people on Saturday to watch the stage shows. All but the guitar workshops will be free with a festival ticket.

Discussed and approved. An Open House crafting session will take place on Wednesday May 25 in the Log Cabin, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Each person will bring their own craft project to do. Craft and Chat session, a good way to spend time and meet new people and share your talents.
Jeanette Young reported on Vendors up to this point. The lemon shake-up people are interested in setting up a Leather goods booth. This will be charged a normal fee. Jeanette is talking to several people trying to find a group that will do a Bake Sale at the festival. A man from Nashville has inquired about setting up a booth to sell his handmade (USA made).
Advertising: Jim Winger reports on all the possibilities he has investigated and inquired about. Some are possibilities for us and several not. Some possibilities are NCCVB rack cards in welcoming centers (Visitors Centers), & radio stations. Good places to advertise will be WAWK Kendallville, WFGA "Froggie" Auburn, and a maybe a Coldwater or southern border Michigan station. Jim will continue to work on these. Barbara Collins motions we advertise with three radio stations. Pam Keiper seconds. All approve. Motion carried.

Why don't bands want to promote themselves?

Linda is busy trying to put together publicity for the upcoming Memorial festival. The frustrating part is bands do an extremely poor job of having material that is press ready. Snapshots of fans, lots of them. Professional photo that tells a story for the newspaper, few or none. Color photos that most web sites and newspapers want, not to be found.

Where is the biography of the band that has a story versus Joe plays banjo, Tom is a great guitar player loved by his mother, etc. Don't bands ever read a newspaper story or look at some of the bluegrass magazines? Buyers of magazines, papers, blogs, etc. want a story not dry copy. Why is it up to the event producer to create this?

OK, some bands change so often that only the band leader is common from month to month. The leader could still have an interesting story to tell and a professional publicity shot.

Most bands now have a web site that someone has sold them on using the latest and greatest gizmo. Today that seems to be Adobe flash. Guess what, you cannot easily extract information from a flash presentation so it is unusable for publicity outside of the bands web site. If the band doesn't have an Electronic Press Kit, EPK in the jargon, then please, please create a web site that will allow copy and paste. I'm not going to retype your stuff!

One last word, a high resolution photo is not a photo that displays well on your web page. A high res is 1,000,000 pixel or larger not 1,000 pixel. The band has that high res photo when the picture was taken so put it on the web site someplace.

Bull is no stranger in the Midwest when you mention guitar playing, Bull has won numerous awards doing just that. A respected instructor and teacher in his field, Bull also traveled for several years with Rhonda Vincent and in 1999 formed his own band, "Bull's Eye" which he still performs with today. Bull and his band recently won 2009 National Single Mic Championship at Silver Dollar City. He holds the title of SPGMBA Midwest Guitar Player of the Year for 2004, 2006 & 2007. Bull has 2 solo projects that have received high recognition titled "Bull's Eye" and "Rosewood, Spruce & Ebony".

“Bull Harman’s workshop will include basic guitar instruction. Different types of rhythms used in bluegrass, lead-in runs to chord changes as well as basic chords and non-basic chords unique to Bull's style. A few months ago you guys were kind enough to answer some questions about jam sessions. Unfortunately, like a raccoon, once you feed me I keep coming back for more!

I am clearly not ready for prime time with my bass, but I am working on it. I am very interested in getting lessons with someone who is a multi-instrumentalist that maybe plays some bass but primarily plays one of the other instruments—so I can better learn what those instrumentalists expect to hear from the bass and at the same time get a few bass tips as well.

Do you have any recommendations for the Fort Wayne area?

Stewart Hall 83, a NIBGA member, passed away at his home in Plymouth, IN. He was very ill with cancer.

Stewart was a very accomplished banjo player and could play the fiddle when called up-on to do so.
He came to many, many Kendallville festival's and will be missed by those who played music with him. I have played many times with him over the years and very proud to call Stewart my friend.

Charlie Louvin July 7, 1927 - Jan. 26, 2011

Veteran Grand Ole Opry favorite Charlie Louvin lost his battle with pancreatic cancer early Wednesday morning, January 26, 2011. He was 83 and died at his home in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, according to Nashville radio reports.

In 1955, the Louvin Brothers’ When I Stop Dreaming became their first song to enter the Top 10 on the country charts. That same year, the brothers performed at the Grand Ole Opry for their first time and were also invited to tour with Elvis Presley as the King’s opening act. Although the Louvin Brothers parted ways in 1963, their music has lived on to this day with hits such as Knoxville Girl and I Don’t Believe You’ve Met My Baby.

501c3 investigation – Chris C. As things are now we do not qualify for this status. Chris will look into possibility of sitting up a foundation within NIBGA to be able to accept donations. If we sent a ballot with the note that unreturned ballots could be voted by the board, would that qualify as a Quorum to change the constitution? Joe Steiner will investigate
Electrical problem at gate area. Joe S. will take care of this.
Jeanette Young – Vendor chairman, reports she will continue to look for vendors for the festival. All agreed for her to use which ever Wood Vendor she chooses. Discussion on how to attract new vendors.
Joe Steiner – Band Chairman, reviewed the list of bands hired for the spring and fall 2011 festivals. He is within the set budget for both festivals at this time. All but two bands are hired for spring and almost all for fall.
Host families are needed to provide food, snacks, drinks, and or a resting place for the bands.
Workshops for the festivals. Discussion on how much to charge, what day(s), to hold workshops, how long they should be, etc. have been discussed several times. Bull Harmon has agreed to do an extended workshop in the spring 2011. At this time the board is considering this for a Friday. Chris Cooperrider agreed to help Dave Vogie set up the workshops. Joe Steiner motioned to have a Friday extended workshop. Paul Saurborn second. All agree. Motion carried. (Times to be decided later.)
Joe Steiner motioned to give 2 free W/E tickets to workshop teachers who do at least a 2 hour minimum workshop. This does not include early camping or electric. Paul Saurborn second. All agree. motion carried.
Advertising: Discussion and several suggestions on continued and new ways to advertise. Jim Winger will look into several possibilities.
Tri State Blue Book will be one advertising for $125
The Terry Lease book will not be printed
Don Moore is working on Placemats with advertising on them to be distributed in the Kendallville area prior to festivals. Cost $195.00. More advertisers are needed he says.
Other suggestions for advertising: Whatz-Up, Electric Company fliers sent with Elect. bills, WAWK radio station. Fort Wayne radio stations. WSLE in Valparaiso. Joe Steiner has asked bands to put links up on their WEB sites. Continue to research. Northern Indiana Bluegrass Association fliers will be distributed in many directions all over the USA. Jim W. will report back at next meeting.

NEW BUSINESS

Discussion on possibly changing the Dues date of renewal. After discussion, TJ Collins motioned to keep the renewal date the same. Paul Saurborn second. All agree. Motion carried.
The sheep shearing show has been moved to a date that is not apart of our contract.
Golf carts will remain same as 2010; Port-a-jons will remain same as 2010; Security will remain same as 2010; For further information on these see October minutes.

To Our Dear Friends and Fans:

We want to let you all know that "Cherryholmes" (the group) is officially disbanding. Our final performances will be on May 6 at the Doyle Lawson Bluegrass Festival in Denton, NC and May 7 at Houstonfest in Galax, VA.

Many of you have watched us from the beginning. You've seen our children grow into young adults. Though it is bittersweet, there comes a time in a family when seasons change. We've always known this season would come. Now that it has, we believe it is only right that our young folks be allowed to follow their own dreams and goals for the future. With spouses to consider and differing career aspirations, they deserve the freedom to choose their own paths without the extreme interdependence that exists in a family business.

Nearly twelve years ago, God sent our family on an amazing adventure. We are blessed to have traveled hundreds of thousands of miles, playing the music we've created and loved. We've seen the beauty of our great country as well as much of the world. We've met and made true friendships with our icons. It has been an honor to receive several Grammy nominations and Entertainer awards. Of course, the honor of regularly performing on the Grand Ole Opry is the pinnacle of our experiences. We all look forward to the next chapter of our adventure.

First, we want to thank Ricky Skaggs and our friends at Skaggs Family Records for all they have done to help us – for believing in us, encouraging us, praying for us, and working long hours to help us get our music out. We want to thank our agent Toby Tumarkin and the staff at Columbia Artist Management for getting us into some of the most beautiful theaters in the country, for opening the doors to symphony performances, and for our wonderful experiences in the UK.

Warning RV scam

We got a call yesterday asking what we thought about a GREAT deal on a Jayco trailer. Only $2,500 for a big 2006 unit on eBay with free shipping. The book value appeared to be over $12,000! What a deal! Just one problem, it was a phishing scam. If you had paid $2,500 you would have never heard from them again. The web site was an eBay look alike, not really eBay. Upon investigation, I found the same bargain on Craigslist throughout the country. Many of the sites had alreay flagged the information as a phishing scheme.

Many bluegrass'ers are campers and often looking for great deals. If it is almost too good to be true ...

Songwriting Contest May 21-22, 2011

The West Michigan Bluegrass Music Association is hosting their first songwriting contest. The on-site competition will begin May 21, with finals on May 22. There will be competitions in both Gospel and Secular music with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes in each category. Fran Adams, 81, died Jan 2, 2010

Fran and his wife Jane who recently passed away, were long time members of NIBGA. We first knew of Fran when he came to Hillbrook Campground near Ottawa, OH with his friend George Page in the '80s. They came in a van and parked not too far from us. They played beautiful music all weekend.

I later years we met his daughter Sandy Tedford and through her became more acquainted with Jane and Fran.

Old Time Jam date change

The Firehouse Tea and Coffee Café 1245 East State Blvd., Fort Wayne, IN 46805 (260) 444-4071 is closed on New Years Day, so we will NOT be jamming this weekend, Jan 1. We will be meeting two weeks after that on Jan 15.

I hope we get a big crowd because rumor has it that someone from the paper is coming to do a feature on the café and our jam as well.

We are still committed to strictly Southern Old Time music. I’ve attached a sample tune, which I hope to do before each session, as a suggested tune of the week to learn. Fran Miller died Nov. 27, 2010

Frances J. Miller, 88, of White Pigeon, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo of natural causes.

Fran is the wife of Zeb Miller. They have attended NIBGA festivals for many years and could be found at the top of Michigan hill with their many friends playing music.

November 21, 2010 Meeting of Northern Indiana Bluegrass Association

The meeting was called to order by Vice President – Joe Steiner at 12:25 P.M.

Jim and Linda Winger were absent because they were at their 50^th Anniversary Party. Congratulations Jim & Linda.

The minutes of the last meeting were e-mailed by Sect Barbara Collins on October 17, 2010 to all officers.

The Treasurer Linda Winger sent the October Financial report to each officer, Totals as of 10/31/10.

INFORMATION ITEM:

The contract for 2010/1011 between Northern Indiana Bluegrass Association and South West Conservation Club has been signed and paid as of 10/17/10. This is where the meetings for Oct., Nov., Jan., Feb., March & April are held. The jamming is open to all ~ Beginning at noon until about 6:00 P.M. the third Sunday of each month that meetings are held.

OLD BUSINESS

501c3 research. Chris Cooperrider has been researching all the details of becoming a 501c3 club. There are a lot of details (rules and regulations) and forms involved. Chris explained all the details she has gathered up to now. Chris reported that it is very involved and detailed and will take a lot of work to achieve this. She will continue to research and work on the project. At this point we do not qualify for 501c3.

Joe Steiner will continue to work on the Electrical problem at the gate area.

T-Shirt project. Linda Winger has captured all historical shirt designs and posted them on the web. She needs to know who designed some of the early ones. Are we missing any? If anyone has any helpful information about past T-shirts, will you please contact tres@nibga.com or give her a call.

TABLE: Vendor chair Jeanette Young will look at the Wood Vendor situation. She has had several offers and will need to settle on one vendor by May.

NEW BUSINESS

Joe Steiner – Band Chairman – gave a list of bands hired and ones being considered for Spring and Fall 2011 Festivals. There was discussion and suggestions on bands the club is interested in.

Consideration – possible change to workshop format.

Add intensive workshop to festival, maybe Friday during the day?

Earmark money for an instructor. Discussion followed. Each attendee would possible pay $20.00 each for a 4 to 6 hour instructional class.

Paul Saurborn motioned to earmark $500.00 for an instructor in an extended workshop. Pam Keiper second. All approved. Motion carried.

There was discussion about instructor possibilities. Paul motioned for Joe Steiner to find an instructor. T.J. second. All approve. Motion carried.

Advertising for 2011

IBMA guide has an ad (as part of our sponsorship cost.)

Discussion on advertising budget for 2011. It was decided to go with last year’s budget.

T.J. Collins motioned to set the advertising budget at $6,000.00. Paul second. All approve. Motion carried.

Advance tent rental due 12/31/10 to get the discount.

The discount is a significant savings.

Paul Saurborn motioned to accept the savings offer. T.J. Collins second. All approve. Motion carried. Treasurer Linda Winger will send payment before 12/31/10.

Postage is going up in 2011. Linda Winger purchased 4,000 forever stamps. This will result in a large savings if rates go up.

Xymmetric internet mail and domain name fee is $135.00 every 6 months. Need approval to pay.
